Did you know this? I just found out that Mercado Libre had its own token:
@Mercadolibre closes a chapter in crypto… and opens another
because it decided to shut down its reward token Mercado Coin after 4 years. It never achieved real adoption and turned out to be more of a curiosity than a useful solution.
Therefore, instead of abandoning the ecosystem, it shifts focus 👉 now backing its stablecoin MeliDolar (MUSD), pegged to the dollar and designed for something much more practical: cashback, savings and real use within its platform.
Moreover, this move is not alone. Nubank's case with its Nucoin (which fell 97%) confirms a trend: volatile reward tokens are not performing as expected.
So, the message is clear:
fewer “trend tokens” ❌
more real utility and stability ✅
Meanwhile, Mercado Libre remains in the crypto world, even holding Bitcoin on its balance sheet. It's not a step back… it's a strategic adjustment.
Do you think stablecoins will dominate this type of ecosystem? 🤔
