    JUST IN: Yield Guild Games is shutting down its YGG Play Web3 game publishing unit, affecting 35 employees. The platform and its games will go offline on July 31, as YGG pivots back to its play-to-earn roots and shifts focus toward training gaming data for AI labs, CEO Gabby Dizon announced.

    A probably lesser talked about fallout from the sunset of @YGG_Play is that more games are sunsetting from Abstract While YGG never mentioned about Abstract, I can’t help think that it may be a factor here All of the games published by YGG Play are in Abstract and with all the FUD and recent project departures in that chain, it’s not hard to see why YGG will also do the same This is a sad news indeed but kudos to @gabusch and team for knowing when and where to pivot I wish you and YGG all the best!

    Sad news today - we are sunsetting our Web3 game publishing unit @YGG_Play, and 35 jobs will be affected as a result. We're committed to paying 8 additional weeks for our team to manage the transition and will help them find new roles. YGG Play games - @LOLLandGame @waifusweeper and the @YGG_Play platform will be available until July 31st, then will go offline. @GIGACHADBAT will return to @delabsOfficial and @RagnarokBreaker will continue on with @planetariumhq. Going forward, YGG will continue on with a small team and will go back to our roots with working with our game community to play games and train data to sell to AI Labs. A heartfelt thank you to our YGG Play team, community, partners and everyone that has made our journey together memorable. We'll continue on with our play-to-earn roots, but in a different form going forward. More details and full interview with Jon Jordan below.

    These kinds of shutdowns are going to increase and scale way more. Especially on the gaming side, it’s impossible to establish a sustainable model; capturing users without an economy or handing out free money is literally impossible. Users in crypto are not real gamers. Sure, including myself, we all played games at some point and still do, but we play crypto games solely for the money. To fix this, either a massive, mainstream Web2 IP needs to successfully integrate into crypto (though most have failed), or it’s best if it just doesn’t happen at all. Gaming is a hobby. The moment you start making money from your hobby, it turns into a job, and the day you stop earning what you want, you lose the hobby too. Getting this balance right is impossible. A gamer is a gamer, they don’t care about the cash; they just do what they love and want to spend their time on. If it’s not working, there's no point in forcing it.

    According to The Defiant, Web3 gaming guild Yield Guild Games (YGG) will shut down its game publishing division YGG Play, affecting 35 positions. Co‑founder Gabby Dizon said the YGG Play platform and games such as LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper will operate until after July 31 before being taken offline. YGG stated that this adjustment is “driven by the market, not the product,” mainly due to macro‑environment factors.
