The coinbase message field is not spam and it’s not remotely comparable to spam.
The Genesis block’s embedded message (“The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”) is not spam because it was deliberately placed by Satoshi Nakamoto himself in the coinbase field, a protocol-allowed space for miners, to serve as an immutable, verifiable timestamp proving the exact date of Bitcoin’s birth and as a concise political statement about fiat fragility; it is tiny, one-time, foundational history, not an attempt to abuse or commercialize block space.
This stands apart from modern profit-driven data spam that treats the chain as cheap storage.
